Interested in the meeting of cultures and aesthetics through the arts and new media, and motivated by the idea of creating and consolidating artistic relations between Quebec and Mexico, two regions of North America where digital and media arts are particularly dynamic and prolific, we hope to initiate our research and development of a project for presentation in the public spaces of both countries (and elsewhere!). Entitled Light Shadows, it will bring together installations and installation performances designed for outdoor presentations. At this point, we imagine creating a itinerary of works that, through the digital technologies they use, their space and their artistic intentions, will highlight the highly frequented outdoor urban spaces, offering a renewed look at media art for the public space, a counter-point to the design and entertainment projects that are increasingly common in our cities.
Our research interests focus on the relationship between the exterior and the interior of buildings, between the inside and the outside, the revealed and the hidden as well as showcasing the “reverse” of media work what is on the “reverse” in media work. Collaborative work, as a pair, also echoes the axis we want to develop: it will be reflected not only in our work model as an ad hoc collective and in the spirit that drives us, but also in the choice of artists we will make.
We imagine creating a body of work that can be adapted to different places and travel easily to allow multiple disseminations on the local, national and international scenes.
The goals of the M&M Curatorial Research Residency Program are to encourage dialogue and the sharing of knowledge and to instigate a means of creation and exchange between the active players of the contemporary art milieu in two major poles of contemporary art in North America. While allowing curators in Montreal and Mexico – established or emerging – to put forward ideas, concepts and innovative initiatives in current art, this program will act as a strategic platform for bridging the two communities together.
