Reading Circle

As a sign of peace and recognition, OBORO is dedicating 2017 to Indigenous artists and thinkers. The Reading Circle is a series of seminars and talks intended to intellectually nourish our public and our community of artists from all disciplines.

Throughout the year, Guy Sioui Durand, Tomson Highway, Dana Claxton, David Garneau and Sonia Robertson will each give a two-part presentation of theoretical texts written by Indigenous writers from various nations within the land now known as Canada.

Each presenter will first offer a stimulating seminar to twenty participants that will involve a close reading and analysis of the selected texts (to register online, go to the presenter’s page below).

In order to disseminate the content beyond the initial reading group, in the days following the seminar each guest will present the ideas discussed in the texts in a public talk.

By the end of the series, we wish to have assembled an array of texts and concepts put forward by Indigenous thinkers so as to make them part of our available resources.

The Reading Circle grew out of extensive discussions between the Indigenous and non-indigenous members of our community. Through this series, we wish to provide a forum for diverse voices from across the country that encourages a period of reflection and intellectual dialogue and outlines common knowledge bases.

The Reading Circle seeks to offer a convivial and peaceful context for discussion, exchange, and learning.

We acknowledge the support of the Canada Council for the Arts.
