Solo de musique concrète pour 6 pianos
sans pianiste
is a re-reading of the concept of the ruined piano in the form of an audio installation using beat-up old pianos. Six resonating pianos—one "bass" piano and five "accompaniment" pianos—create a multiple-source surround-sound audio installation. Viewers are invited
to re-examine and listen anew to this "familiar" object without it being mediated by "classical" elements such as a musician or score. The six pianos from different periods respond to pulses from out-of-synch motors placed inside the pianos. These motors interpret an acoustic analysis
of plunderphonic sound made up of piano solos by figures such as Sun Ra, Duke Ellington and György Ligeti, transforming the pianos into vibrating surfaces. [E.D.]
