This master class explores light and shadow as central components to the recording and display of video. This workshop is designed for visually oriented professional media artists who are interested in an expanded, hands-on approaches to recording and presenting video. Pollard, Brouillard and Moore share their skills and experiences in the development of in-situ installations and performances that capture the human form in movement and deploy a variety of video display technologies. Participants will begin by recording video material in a studio environment, allowing them to control lighting and to work with high contrast imagery along with some green screen production. This material will serve as a basis for the subsequent creative and technical exercises involving editing, composition and presentation technologies.
Each of the 4 sessions is comprised of a concentrated overview of concepts and techniques, lasting only 3 hours. Between sessions, the workshop conveners will make the facilities accessible to participants upon appointment so as to provide practical experience and individualized instruction.
Program
Day 1, February 6: Planning and production period (assessment of goals, available tools and objectives followed by the recording of visual material).
Day 2, February 13: Post-production (isolating, organizing, editing and transcoding material).
Day 3, February 14: Composition (compositing and additional transcoding of material).
Day 4, February 20: Display (testing and reworking of material through an adapted set of display technologies and devised exhibition environments).
Note: Participants are required to work outside the 3-hour sessions, particularly on Sunday, February 7 and during the week between February 14 and 20.
Techniques to be discussed and explored
- Lighting and production concerns related to shooting the human form over a black backdrop.
- Planning and workflow allowing for intuition and play.
- Lighting and production concerns related to shooting green screen.
- Transcoding video for editing and compositing.
- Devising post-production environments for installations.
- Transcoding video for display purposes.
- Configuring multiple projectors or monitors.
- Rear projection.
- Devising projection surfaces.
- In situ projection and mapping (software and hardware).
- Triggering and/or cuing video for installation or performance.
Prerequisites
- Be a professional artist with some video experience;
- Previous experience using video cameras;
- Aptitude and previous experience with computers and software, particularly non-linear editing and composition software such as Premiere, Photoshop and/or After Effects;
- Some previous experience handling projectors and monitors;
- Be a self-employed worker or a salaried employee in an enterprise not subject to 1 % Training Investment*;
- Attend every workshop session.

Cancellation / Refund
OBORO does not refund registration fees except in case of illness (with a medical note) or of absolute necessity. In such cases, registration fees are transferable to another workshop or service offered by the New Media Lab.
