Methods, Theories and Tools for Emerging Curators

Workshop
Mondays, from February 19 to March 19, 2018, from 5 to 8pm

Registration
From January 9 to February 9, 2018

In the late twentieh century, the notion of "new media" burst into the world of creation with so-called "new" technologies. If the new media have been mainly focused, in the last twenty or thirty years, on video, photography and experimentation with robotics, the explosion of accessibility to personal and portable workstations, programming and in digital development languages was an opportunity to expand the possibilities of designing interactive environments or works with technical components based on digital creation. From media came hypermedia, robotics, interactive, digital, not to mention many importanty works that circulate in fairs and exhibitions internationally.

This workshop aims to present the methodological tools necessary to support artists in media or digital arts as curator, author or agent. What are the methodologies, strategies, policies and ethics surrounding the creation of technology-based exhibits? A series of open discussions will follow on the various stories of the police station from various perspectives. Participants will be invited to bring individual projects in development for which they will receive individualized coaching with the trainer.

This workshop is anchored in a feminist and postcolonial approach that wants to develop an acuteness to the inclusion and representation of the multiple discursive and critical perspectives present in the digital arts community.

Among the topics covered :
- The role of Media Arts Curators and its challenges;
- Exhibitions places;
- Is media the message?
- The basics: research, selection, commissioned works, distribution;
- Develop stimulating theoretical discourses;
- Prepare a schedule and a budget;
- Develop projects with a wide audience reach;
- Feminist and postcolonial methods;
- Exhibition plan, installation, technical equipment;
- Working with the distribution centre's team.

This workshop aims to provide emerging curators with practical and theoretical skills to develop their own curatorial projects. It will provide a historical overview of the major exhibitions in media and digital arts.
