Kinetics and poetics: Making sound and movement

Workshop
May 24–28, 2017 (detailed schedule below)

Registration
April 19 – May 19, 2017

Structured as a collaborative learning and creative lab, the Kinetics and Poetics: Making Sound and Movement workshop will make use of low tech to explore the artistic and poetic behaviour of moving objects.

By repurposing obsolete technology and using pre-made motors and circuits, participating artists will experiment with the audio and visual aspects of mechanical movement. They will use amplification to reveal the hidden sonorities of raw materials and the natural resonances of mechanical objects. Participants will also explore noise, rhythm, looping, and texture for sound composition and movement, for the visual trace and narrative possibilities.

Unfolding over 5 consecutive days, this research-creation workshop aims to stimulate participants to collaborate and produce a site-specific installation and/or performance in a space outside the gallery. Based on the participants’ discoveries, these ephemeral creations will be conserved through audiovisual documentation.

The workshop is designed for artists working in any art field (visual arts, performance, dance, sound art, etc.)

Please note that the content of the workshop may be revised to suit the needs of the participants. This workshop is offered primarily in French, by bilingual instructors.

Activite Bas de page

Stephanie Castonguay

Driven by experimentation, Stephanie Castonguay’s practice explores processes and phenomena that leave traces. She researches notions of memory and chance by exploring small electronic audio circuits. She wishes to grasp the origin of the current technological landscape through its very essence, that is, materially, through its properties and related physical phenomena.

Anne-F Jacques

Anne-F Jacques is a sound artist living and working in Montreal. She is interested in amplification, oblique interactions between materials and the construction of various idiosyncratic systems and assemblies. Her (in)attention is more particularly focused on small technologies, banal objects and rough sounds. She regularly presents sound installations, performances and ephemeral interventions in South and North America, Japan and Europe.
