October 3-4, 10-11, and 24-25, 2009, from 10 am to 5 pm

In the spirit of the workshops on Ambisonics offered at OBORO’s New Media Lab in 2007 and 2008, we are organizing a revamped workshop that will cover a variety of approaches, methods and recent applications in surround sound.

Daniel Courville’s popular workshop on Ambisonics will be accompanied by Philippe-Aubert Gauthier’s exposé on audio localization, spatialization, and the Wave Field Synthesis system. Additionally, Nils Peters will present the principles of spatial composition and the Virtual Microphone Control (VIMIC) system.

Daniel Courville

Daniel Courville has been a lecturer in sound production and applied computer technology at UQAM’s École des médias since 1990. He is a music producer and since 1988, has been interested in three-dimensional sound recording, processing and reproduction, particularly in Ambisonics. Recently, he has been investigating the integration of Ambisonics into sound production and post-production environments through the development of modular software tools. Daniel Courville holds a master’s degree in communications from UQAM.

Philippe-Aubert Gauthier

Philippe-Aubert Gauthier is a sound and digital artist, musician, junior mechanical engineer, M.Sc., Ph.D. in acoustics and professor at the Université du Québec à Montréal. The heart of his of his artistic approach is based on the interactions of arts, cultures, sciences and technologies. He navigates in a vision of research and integrated creation in which each of these fields of action and related knowledge is used for the development of artistic and musical pieces that address the social and cultural constructions of technologies.

Nils Peters

Nils Peters is a PhD researcher in Music Technology at McGill University and is affiliated with the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology (CIRMMT). His work focuses on the perception and modeling of spatialized sounds. He studied electrical and audio engineering at the University for Music and Dramatic Arts and the University of Technology (Graz, Austria) and graduated with distinction. He has worked as an audio engineer in the fields of recording, post-production and live electronics in Germany, Austria, France and Canada.

Stéphane Claude

Stéphane Claude is an electronic_acoustic composer and sound engineer. His research is based on integrating a conceptual and physiological framework of audio recording and sound installation for different diffusion contexts in the electronic arts.
